
Professor Shahryar Sheikh assumes the office of President of the World Heart Federation since January 2007.
He brings to the office considerable experience in the field of cardiovascular disease and in prevention, particularly in developing countries. In the role of President, Professor Sheikh will lead the World Heart Federation’s work in awareness building, advocacy and sharing science which are critical to the mission of Federation. In addition, his objective is to build and strengthen even stronger relations between the World Heart Federation and its member societies and foundations.
Professor Sheikh received his medical degree from King Edward Medical College in Lahore-Pakistan in 1969 and post graduate training in medicine and cardiology in the United States of America, initially as an intern at Mount Sinai Hospital Services at Elmhurst General Hospital New York and later spent many years at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, USA, as a Medical Resident, Cardiology Fellow and finally as Associate Staff Cardiologist. He returned to Pakistan in 1980 and joined the department of cardiology at King Edward Medical College, Lahore as Assistant Professor and became Associate Professor of Cardiology in 1985. He was appointed as first Executive Director and Professor of Cardiology at Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore in 1989 and served in this capacity for more than 10 years. He is currently serving as Professor of Cardiology at Allama Iqbal Medical College and Consultant Cardiologist at Doctors Hospital & Medical Centre, Lahore.
Professor Sheikh was the recipient of the Government of Pakistan Pride of Performance Award in 1998 for his contribution in organising cardiovascular health care in Pakistan. He was elected President of the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology during 1999-2003 and President of the Pakistan Cardiac Society from 2002-2004. He has been chairman of the editorial board for the Pakistan Heart Journal, served as an Executive Board Member of the World Heart Federation during 1999-2002 and is currently a member of International Committee of the American College of Cardiology.
The new President’s unique experience of having worked with major cardiac organisations, such as World Heart Federation, the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology and the American College of Cardiology will greatly assist him in his role as President of the World Heart Federation.
Professor Sheikh lives in Lahore, Pakistan, with his wife.
