Scientific Council on Rheumatic Heart Disease

The purpose of the Scientific Council on Rheumatic Heart Disease is to achieve the objectives of the World Heart Federation related to the prevention, detection and treatment of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. The council promotes a global exchange on rheumatic heart disease control.

Scientific Council on Rheumatic Heart Disease activities:

  • Promotion of secondary prevention of rheumatic heart disease
  • Improvement of community awareness of the consequences of rheumatic heart disease and the importance of compliance with secondary prophylaxis
  • Development of sessions for the World Congress of Cardiology
  • Demonstration projects on register-based secondary prevention
  • Training of health care providers on the diagnosis and management of acute rheumatic fever
  • Establishment of online Rheumatic Heart Disease Network  for use by health care professionals involved in rheumatic heart disease control

The council will advocate for rheumatic heart disease research by:

  • Recognizing areas in need of further research
  • Facilitating collaboration among interdisciplinary specialists
  • Encourage Research initiatives linking low and middle income countries with Centres of Excellence
