WELCOME TO THE WORLD CONGRESS OF CARDIOLOGY: 18-21 MAY, BUENOS ARIES, ARGENTINA

The World Congress of Cardiology 2008, will take place from 18-21 May in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has been organized by the World Heart Federation, the Argentine Society of Cardiology and the Argentine Federation of Cardiology. It is comprised of a rich scientific programme and will gather experts from around the world to help exchange knowledge on the latest research and advances in cardiovascular disease.

“From Patients to Populations”

The Congress theme is “From Patients to Populations” and highlights the importance of combining the efforts of the scientific and public communities to reduce the burden of cardiovascular disease. The medical community are dedicated to discovering technologies, therapies and interventions to improve patient care and help those in the public arena to increase awareness and reduce risk.

More than 17.5 million people died of cardiovascular disease in 2005 (the last year for which a statistic was available), according to the World Health Organization. That made it mankind’s biggest killer. Eighty per cent of the deaths were in low- and middle-income countries.

Delegates “will have the opportunity to share and learn about the latest science advances on the management of cardiovascular diseases and to review effective approaches to tackling the rising burden of cardiovascular disease globally,” said World Heart Federation President, Shahryar Sheikh and President of the World Congress of Cardiology 2008, Horacio Faella.

Come and join us in Buenos Aires

The home of the World Congress of Cardiology 2008 will be the Exhibition and Convention Centre “La Rural”. The main entrance is located on Avenida Sarmiento 2704 in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. A total 15,000 delegates are expected. Online registrations are now closed however, you can register onsite from 17 May 2008.

There will be 140 exhibitors and sponsors in the exhibition area (6,000 sqm) who will showcase their latest equipment and pharmaceutical products within the cardiology field. This will be complemented by another 25 educational Satellite Symposia and/or Workshop Sessions, which will take place during dedicated morning, intersession and evening slots.

More than 2,000 abstracts were submitted and of those accepted over 400 will be presented orally and 1,360 in poster format. All accepted abstracts will be published in Circulation, the American Heart Association journal.

There will be over 250 sessions at the Congress comprising of:

•    143 Scientific Sessions
•    21 Special Featured Joint Sessions
•    11 Spanish Sessions
•    58 Oral abstract sessions
•    25 Satellite Symposia and Workshops

All the sessions will be presented in English, with the exception of 11 that will be presented in Spanish.

The World Congress of Cardiology 2008 is accredited by the European Board of Accreditation in Cardiology (EBAC) for 18 hours of External CME credits

Dr Sheikh and Dr Faella commented: “One key objective of the scientific programme is to feature globally relevant topics in the diagnosis, management and treatment of cardiovascular diseases inclusive of basic, clinical and population research. Another is to address public policy and advocacy topics related to cardiovascular disease.”
