Promoting Heart Health in Australia
Last week, the National Heart Foundation of Australia announced their investment of '$1m a month' for cardiovascular research in 2012. Heart disease and stroke remain the number one cause of death in Australia and in the world. Without continued research on the prevention and control of cardiovascular disease (CVD), there is no hope of reducing the global burden of disease and we applaud the Heart Foundation for maintaining their support of research.
Additionally, the National Heart Foundation is focusing on the prevention of CVD in Australia by advocating for healthy urban planning. Last week the Australian Government launched their first National Urban Design Protocol - a "how to" for city planning - supported by the Healthy Spaces and Places project. This project was created by the National Heart Foundation Australia, the Planning Institute of Australia and the Australian Local Government Association to promote the creation of healthy spaces in cities. This unique collaboration is working towards making Australia a healthier place to live.
