U.S. Food and Drug Administration to regulate tobacco

U.S. Senate passes the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act

On 11 June 2009 the U.S. Senate has passed the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which would allow the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate the manufacturing and marketing of tobacco.

The bill would allow the FDA to:

  • require changes to nicotine yields and other chemicals in cigarettes and other tobacco products
  • restrict tobacco marketing
  • ban the use of marketing expressions such as "light" and "mild" that might mislead people into thinking there was less health risk in the products
  • require pre-market approval of all new tobacco products
  • ban candied or flavored tobacco products

“The U.S. Senate has taken a bold and courageous step to ensure a healthier future for our children with passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. The legislation will allow us to protect them from a dirty business that has infiltrated school grounds and homes for many generations. For far too long, the industry has misled consumers and manipulated children with false claims about its deadly products,” said AHA CEO Nancy Brown.
