A WIN FOR THE GLOBAL CVD COMMUNITY

The CVD community will be represented within the Civil Society Task Force.

Formation of the Task Force

Earlier this year, the successful lobbying of your governments on behalf of the World Heart Federation and the NCD Alliance led to the United Nations agreement to create a Civil Society Task Force for the UN High- Level Summit on NCDs this September.  This Task Force reports to the President of the General Assembly, Joseph Deiss and is driving the effective and meaningful participation of civil society organizations leading up to the Summit.  In April, the World Heart Federation was informed that a representative of the CVD community was not included in the seven civil society representatives that had been invited to sit on this Task Force.  Given that CVD is the leading cause of all mortality and morbidity worldwide - responsible for 17.1 million deaths each year – the absence of a member of the CVD community was startling.

Successful Advocacy

Following the advocacy efforts of our leadership, members and friends, the President of the UN General Assembly, Joseph Deiss, invited World Heart Federation Board Member and Secretary Dr Nooshin Bazargani to represent CVD. Dr Bazargani is a leading cardiologist from Dubai. This success assures us that the CVD community will have a voice at the table at the upcoming UN Meeting.
