MEMBERS: BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS AT THE WHO AFRO REGIONAL CONSULTATION
The first Africa Regional Ministerial Consultation on NCDs was held on Wednesday 6 April and ended with the adoption of the ‘Brazzaville Declaration on NCDs.’ The World Heart Federation was represented by Dr Kingsley Akinroye, President of the African Heart Network, and Gerald Yonga, President of the Kenyan Cardiology Society.
Both Dr Akinroye and Dr Yonga stressed the need to:
- strengthen and standardize national health systems
- increase awareness through the use of communications platforms such as the Go Red for Women campaign and World Heart Day
- support and encourage partnerships, alliances and networks bringing together national, regional and global players including academic and research institutions, public and private sectors, and civil society
- take into account regional distinctions, such as rheumatic heart disease
The Declaration
Within the Brazzaville Declaration, the ministers:
- committed to develop national NCD action plans and strengthen institutional capacities for NCD prevention and control
- urged the United Nations to include NCD prevention and control in all future global development goals
- called on WHO, partners and civil society organizations to provide technical support to Member States for implementing, monitoring, and evaluating recommendations contained in the Declaration
