Outcomes of the UN SummitThe adoption of the Political Declaration on NCDs is a significant milestone that has raised the level of awareness of CVD and NCDs to unprecedented levels. Yet there are some key areas that remain weak and that will need to be strongly advocated for. Key CVD and NCD Publications Launched The voice of civil society was further strengthened this year with a number of key publications, several of which were launched in New York during the week of the Summit. IN THIS ISSUEWorld Heart Day, Urbanization and CVDThe health challenges and opportunities poised by urbanization were highlighted at various events throughout the UN Summit which has made this year’s World Heart Day theme, One World, One Home, One Heart, truly symbolic. Should Trade Trump Health? AMA says NOThe American Medical Association (AMA) has called for the exclusion of tobacco and alcohol products from future Free Trade Agreements. Women and NCDsCardiovascular disease remains the number one cause of death among women. Recognizing the need for a special focus on women’s health, the World Heart Federation joined with other key women’s health organizations to co-host a side event in New York addressing the particular vulnerabilities of women. Social Media for Social GoodThe use of technology and social media for effective advocacy and awareness was a key topic in New York during the High Level Summit. Ensuring the momentum of the NCD movement, the World Heart Federation has played an active role in advocating for action on CVD and NCDs at the World Health Organization’s annual regional committee meetings.
