Welcome to the World Congress of Cardiology: 18-21 May, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The World Congress of Cardiology 2008, will take place from 18-21 May in Buenos Aires, Argentina and has been organized by the World Heart Federation, the Argentine Society of Cardiology and the Argentine Federation of Cardiology. It is comprised of a rich scientific programme and will gather experts from around the world to help exchange knowledge on the latest research and advances in cardiovascular disease.

Prevention and Control Journal to be renamed

Prevention and Control, the World Heart Federation’s quarterly journal on cardiovascular health, is to be renamed – CVD Prevention and Control.

Toolkit launched: key statistics to help health-care providers increase awareness of cardiovascular disease

Cardiovascular disease is on the increase in women worldwide, yet this fact is relatively unknown. There is also a distinct lack of data on the subject hence an urgent need to build awareness. The World Heart Federation has therefore, launched a toolkit to help health-care providers highlight this burden and advocate for change.

Developing a regional approach to rheumatic heart disease control in the Pacific

In the region with the world's highest recorded incidence of acute rheumatic fever, the World Heart Federation and the World Health Organization co-sponsored the Second Regional Workshop in Rheumatic Heart Disease Prevention in Nadi, Fiji, on 13–15 February 2008.

World Heart Federation names Twin Centres 2008 fellows

The World Heart Federation has awarded Twin Centres’ fellowships to young cardiologists from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Nigeria and Tanzania.

Use “World No Tobacco Day” to urge smoke-free policies

The World Heart Federation encourages its members to mark World No Tobacco Day, 31 May 2008, and to use it as a vehicle to advocate for smoke-free environments and smoking cessation programmes. The theme of this year’s World No Tobacco Day is “Tobacco-Free Youth”.

Proposed action plan on noncommunicable diseases is reviewed by World Heart Federation

The World Heart Federation was among the 20 nongovernmental organisations consulted by the World Health Organization about its proposed Action Plan for the implementation of its global strategy to prevent cardiovascular disease and the other major noncommunicable diseases.

A practical new guide to effective smoke-free policies

Policy-makers who are committed to protecting the public from the detrimental effects of second-hand tobacco smoke now have a powerful tool at their disposal: a detailed, comprehensive and easy-to-use guide on how to advocate for, enact and implement smoke-free laws.

Countries flock to European Heart Health Charter

Twenty-seven European countries have signed the European Heart Health Charter since it was launched on 12 June 2007. In signing, the countries committed themselves to implementing specific measures to reduce Europe’s heavy burden of cardiovascular disease. Most of the signings were by representatives of nongovernmental organizations working at the national level to prevent and control cardiovascular disease.
