PREVENTION AND CONTROL JOURNAL TO BE RENAMED

Prevention and Control, the World Heart Federation’s quarterly journal on cardiovascular health, is to be renamed – CVD Prevention and Control. The first issue to carry the new name will be published in May 2008, in conjunction with the World Congress of Cardiology.

“The name was changed to help readers more easily grasp in one quick glance the journal’s focus on cardiovascular disease,” said the journal’s Editor-in-Chief Andy Wielgosz. “We hope they’ll appreciate the improvement. Although we considered other names, this is the one we found to provide the most continuity and to be the most effective and least disruptive.”

“Starting the journal and serving as its Editor-in-Chief during its first three years has been extremely enriching, rewarding and challenging,” he said. “I’m deeply grateful to everyone who’s had a hand in making it the success that it is”.

Establishes niche in low- and middle-income countries

Prevention and Control established its niche in addressing the problems faced by low- and middle-income countries, where 80% of deaths from cardiovascular disease occur. The journal actively solicits manuscripts from authors in those countries, and makes a point of working with and encouraging authors whose principal language may not be English.

CVD Prevention and Control provides a forum for dialogue and education on epidemiology of the cardiovascular problem and on interventions to effectively control and prevent the disease and its risk factors.

Writers workshop

Andy Wielgosz and his associates regularly hold Writers Workshops at world and regional congresses of cardiology to assist and to train aspiring contributors. Such workshops were held in Barcelona in September 2006, Ottawa in May 2007, Taipei in December 2007 and Trinidad in February 2008. Another such workshop will be held on Monday, 19 May 2008 at the next World Congress of Cardiology, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Highlights of the workshop include how to prepare manuscripts for publication, a demonstration of how manuscripts are processed in the Elsevier electronic system and a discussion on the aim and scope of the journal.

“The workshops are designed to teach the skills of medical writing to novices,” Dr Wielgosz said. “We do not reject an article just because it has language errors. Articles are peer reviewed, and these workshops help participants get a good sense of the type of papers they can submit and how to do so.”

Coming up

The next issue will contain something new: reports from the various regions of the World Heart Federation as presented to the Board in November 2007. The journal will continue to contain country reports from ProCOR – the international web-based resource on cardiovascular health: www.procor.org

Among the articles that will appear in the next issue is one by Maria Ines Reinert Azambuja and colleagues that will explore the role of inflammation in ischemic heart disease. Another article by Adetunji T. Toriola and colleagues will examine medical students’ smoking as a predictor to whether they will advise patients to quit smoking.
