Health professionals from the Pacific Islands are calling on policy-makers to make acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) a public health priority for people living in the Pacific Islands. At the First World Heart Federation and World Health Organization Workshop on Rheumatic Heart Disease held in Fiji in October 2006, healthcare providers and health officials from 11 Pacific Island states signed a formal Call to Action on 13 October 2006.

The World Heart Federation participated in the Oxford Health Alliance summit 20 to 22 November 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa. The focus was on preventing the epidemic of cardiovascular and other chronic diseases. Anti-Tobacco CampaignBLOOMBERG CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ANTI-TOBACCO CAMPAIGN IN LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES. A global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries has been launched with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg, international businessman and Mayor of New York. As part of this initiative, a competitively awarded grants programme will support projects to develop and deliver high-impact tobacco control interventions.

Recognizing that overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions in Europe and that the phenomenon is contributing to the concomitant epidemic of cardiovascular diseases, the region’s governments have adopted a historic new “European Charter on Counteracting Obesity.” “Overweight and obesity contribute to a large proportion of noncommunicable diseases, shortening life expectancy and adversely affecting the quality of life,” the five-page document declares. Childhood Obesity Think TankMONTREAL THINK TANK TAKES ON CHILDHOOD OBESITY. Experts in childhood obesity gathered 25 to 27 October 2006 at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, for what could be properly termed a high-powered brainstorming session to develop a “societal plan” against the worsening global epidemic of childhood obesity. Health Policy and CVDFORUM ADRESSES NEED TO INFLUENCE HEALTH POLICY. The annual meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research has become established as a premier annual event that brings together policy-makers, development partners and the directors and users of research, to debate critical gaps and to mobilize campaigns that address the health needs of the poor and marginalized. The Global Forum's 2006 annual meeting was organized at the invitation of the Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt.
