BLOOMBERG CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ANTI-TOBACCO CAMPAIGN IN LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES

A global initiative to reduce tobacco use in low- and middle-income countries has been launched with funds from Michael R. Bloomberg, international businessman and Mayor of New York. As part of this initiative, a competitively awarded grants programme will support projects to develop and deliver high-impact tobacco control interventions.

The Initiative places a priority on countries with the greatest number of smokers. There are more than 1 billion smokers in the world today; more than 1 in 4 adults smoke. Over 50% of the world's smokers live in fifteen countries: China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Ukraine, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Poland.

The grants programme will give priority to projects that lead to substantial, sustainable improvements in tobacco control laws, regulations, policies and programmes, including (but not restricted to):

  • tax and price measures, including anti-smuggling measures;
  • establishment of smoke-free workplaces and public places;
  • direct and indirect advertising bans;
  • other evidence-based regulatory/legislative initiatives;
  • effective, long-term mass media campaigns and programmes.

There are two rounds for project submissions, one which closed on 10th January 2007, and one which will close on 13th June 2007.
