WORLD HEART DAY SHOWS SPECTACULAR GROWTH

The final figures are in, and they show that World Heart Day 2006 (Sunday, 24 September) attracted a world of attention. 2006 was the sixth year that World Heart Day took place, and from its modest beginnings it has grown exponentially, in terms of activities, media coverage and website hits.

There was a strong increase in web hits on www.worldheartday.com: the 4.7 million hits in 2006 nearly doubled the figures of the previous year, which remained at 2.5 million hits.

There was an increase of 25% in media appearances, with over 1000 articles or broadcast features about World Heart Day, as opposed to 780 last year, spanning over 65 countries in all continents and many languages. The combined readership or listenership reached 580 million, against 437 million last year.

World Heart Day is currently celebrated in over 100 countries. Research has shown that World Heart Federation members extensively adapted and built on the World Heart Day theme – “How Young is Your Heart?” – and on the customarily eye-catching images of photographer and graphic artist Lois Greenfield.

The theme and images appeared on leaflets, posters and many other promotional materials throughout the world, making World Heart Day a recognizable and enjoyable event to look forward to each year.
