HIGHLIGHTSThe Lancet publishes series about chronic diseasesThe medical journal The Lancet has published a series of papers about the grossly neglected epidemics of cardiovascular disease and the other principal chronic diseases, which include cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. These papers represent a step forward in our understanding of the evidence on cost-effective patient care and population-based interventions. The Asian Pacific heart and stroke community meets in TaipeiThe Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology held its 16th Asian Pacific Congress of Cardiology 13-16 December 2007 in Taipei. The Congress featured the first convocation of Fellows of the College of the Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology. One day before the Congress, the Asia Pacific Heart Network held its annual general meeting and workshop. The World Heart Federation was active at all three events.

Elizabeth Arden to launch Go Red for Women campaignElizabeth Arden, the global prestige beauty products company, will launch an advertising campaign in early 2008 in support of the World Heart Federation’s international Go Red for Women campaign to prevent and control cardiovascular disease in women. The eye-catching advertisements will appear in Europe in the International Herald Tribune and the Financial Times and will feature Oscar-winning actress and Elizabeth Arden spokesperson Catherine Zeta-Jones. The McGill Health Challenge Think Tank tackles growing problem of childhood obesityChildhood obesity was the topic of the 2007 McGill Health Challenge Think Tank in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The World Heart Federation joined the call for ways forward to create “health-friendly” global and local food chains. Students compete to design World Heart Federation cardApproximately 90 students from the International School of Geneva - La Grande Boissière campus - competed to design the World Heart Federation’s 2007 season’s greeting card. There were 16 finalists. The winner was 13-year-old Matilda, whose design drew praise from the judges for its hopefulness, vitality and simplicity.
