Women's Expert panel

The Women’s Expert Panel will advise the World Heart Federation on the scientific and health care-related aspects of its international campaign to reduce cardiovascular disease in women.

The chair of the 10-member panel is Dr. Sania Nishtar of Pakistan, President and Founder of Heartfile in Islamabad, Pakistan, and former Chair of the World Heart Federation’s Foundations Advisory Board. The panel will report its activities to Dr. Sidney C. Smith Jr, Chairman of the World Heart Federation’s Scientific Advisory Board.

The other members are Monica Acevedo Assistant Professor, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile; Nancy Brown, Chief Operating Officer, American Heart Association, and Sharonne Hayes, Director of Mayo Clinic, Women's Heart Clinic, the United States of America; Shanthi Mendis, Coordinator, Cardiovascular Diseases, of the World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland; Sylvia Priori, Salvatore Maugeri Foundation, Institute of Molecular Cardiology, Pavia, Italy; Nizal Saraf Zadegan, Director, Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Centre Isfahan, Iran; Krisela Steyn, Medical Research Council, Cape Town, South Africa; Elinor Wilson, CEO, Canadian Public Health Association of Canada; and Wu Fan, Director of the National Centre for Chronic and Noncommunicable Disease Control and Prevention, China’s Centre for Disease, Beijing, China.

The panel will focus in two major areas:

 

  1. Engage in scientific discussion in the development of:

    • A WHF position statement, based on the assessment of specific needs in developing countries, which is consistent with the WHF Guideline Principles.
    • A Third International Women’s conference needs assessment.

  2. Support and advise the Go Red for Women Initiative.

Cardiovascular disease is the largest single cause of death among women worldwide, accounting for one third of all deaths.
