IN THIS ISSUETobacco control in Colombia: resounding victory for heart healthIn July 2009, Colombia became a regional leader in public health when it enacted a strong, comprehensive law on tobacco control. The Colombian Society of Cardiology, working closely with policymakers, non-governmental organizations and health officials, played a key role in this public health victory. Through its 2009 Award for Leadership and Excellence in Smoke-free Policy, the Global Smokefree Partnership has recognised the Society, along with other key advocates, politicians, institutes and officials for this remarkable achievement. World Heart Federation endorses recommendations included in new report from the Institute of Medicine claiming ‘profound mismatch’ between resources and disease burdenThe World Heart Federation welcomes the Institute of Medicine’s report “Promoting Cardiovascular Health in the Developing World” launched on 22 March. It highlights that more resources, better policies and a comprehensive approach are needed to slow the rapid spread of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in developing countries. WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan, calls for a focused and forceful policy response to noncommunicable diseaseOn 24 February, WHO held its first Global Forum of the Noncommunicable Disease Network (NCDnet). Key stakeholder groups were convened to address the large-scale and increasing global health and development burden posed by NCDs. More than 100 representatives from all stakeholder groups and geographic regions, including HRH Princess Haya Al Hussein of Jordan, and HRH Princess Mathilde of Belgium, Duchess of Brabant, and high-ranking policy makers and officials met to address the NCD gap in the development agenda and the mobilization of support. New ‘Sport and Health’ Collaboration between World Heart Federation and European Healthy Stadia NetworkA new collaboration between the World Heart Federation and the European Healthy Stadia Network is set to increase the number of sports stadia involved in promoting healthy lifestyles and by doing so, help reduce incidence of heart disease and stroke amongst fans, stadia staff and local communities.
