Commonwealth leaders issue landmark statement on non-communicable diseases

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) was held from 27–29 November 2009 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The CHOGM represents a unique opportunity for Commonwealth countries to raise concerns about the key issues that affect their economic and social development. In an unprecedented move, and thanks to lobbying efforts by World Heart Federation members in these countries together with those of the International Diabetes Federation, and the International Union Against Cancer a separate statement highlighting Commonwealth Action to combat NCDs specifically was issued.

Chinese cardiologists champion tobacco control

In China, nearly 30% of all male cardiologists still smoke. Professor Dayi Hu, President of the Chinese Cardiology Society of the Chinese Medical Association, aims to improve quality of care in China by mobilizing cardiologists to quit smoking.

World Heart Federation joins powerful world alliance of health researchers

The World Heart Federation has become a partner organization of the Global Alliance for Chronic Disease, an alliance of institutions collectively managing an estimated 80% of all public health research. First targets were set for concerted action in the fight against chronic non-communicable diseases at the Alliance’s inaugural scientific summit, which took place in New Delhi, India, in November 2009.

Red alert on women's hearts: emphasising the urgent need for research in women

A conference entitled "Red Alert for Women's Hearts”, held on 5 November 2009 reinforced the urgent need for more clinical studies specifically addressing cardiovascular disease in women. The occasion was used to launch a publication, which presents research studies from Europe and identifies knowledge gaps. This joint initiative, of two of our continental members, the European Society of Cardiology and the European Heart Network was part of the EuroHeart project, which is co-funded by the European Commission.

Preventing heart disease in Southeastern Europe

Cardiovascular disease is an urgent threat to both health and economic prospects of Eastern Europe. On 9 October 2009, the International Conference on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Southeastern Europe was held in Banja Luka, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Smoking bans and heart health: new tools for action

The evidence is clear: secondhand smoke is a serious threat to heart health and strong smoking bans save lives. Globally, the World Health Organization estimates that secondhand smoke accounts for 600,000 premature deaths a year. New resources that came out at the end of 2009 anchor these conclusions and support global action for implementing smoke-free policy.

"Eat for Goals!" - Children score goals against youth obesity

Children scored goals to help shootout youth obesity, during an event which ran for six days in the biggest shopping mall in Lyon, France, in November 2009. The initiative promoted the Eat for Goals! children’s cookery book, which was created under the patronage of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), World Heart Federation and the European Commission to address the growing burden of childhood obesity, one of the major public health issues of the 21st century.
