LANDMARK DECISION – UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONVENES A SUMMIT ON NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

The World Heart Federation is pleased and proud to inform you that the UN General Assembly agreed in May to hold a high-level special meeting of the General Assembly in September 2011 on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

Together with our sister federations, we have been working hard to raise the profile of NCDs on the global health agenda. This landmark decision shows that our campaigning efforts are having a real impact.  By mobilizing our member networks and working with the World Health Organization’s NCDnet as well as other key organizations, we are now one step closer to ensuring that NCDs get the urgent attention they deserve. This includes greater focus on NCDs at a national level, an integrated health-systems approach and allocation of essential funding. Increased global and national focus on NCDs will help save millions of lives and help reverse the damaging social and economic effects these diseases are now causing, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
