Prevention and Control to feature Latin America, NepalThe next issue of Prevention and Control will feature articles about the effects of agricultural policy on cardiovascular health in Latin America and about tobacco use among health professionals in Nepal. Prevention and Control is the World Heart Federation’s quarterly journal of cardiovascular health. Europeans launch regional heart health charterThe European Heart Network and the European Society of Cardiology joined the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe and the European Commission in launching the European Heart Health Charter. The charter is a Europe-wide policy document focusing on the prevention of cardiovascular disease. European Heart Network holds annual workshop and general assembly in DenmarkThe European Heart Network held its annual workshop and general assembly 23 to 25 May 2007 in Elsinore, Denmark. Invited speaker Dr Harry Rutter of the United Kingdom characterized healthy environments as those promoting physical activity, wellbeing, access, independence, engagement, strong social networks and good aesthetic design and as being equitable and green. He argued for policy interventions to make them more common. His messages were consistent with the slogan for this year’s World Heart Day, “Team Up for Healthy Hearts,” which seeks to engage entire communities in the cause of heart health. World Health Assembly approves action plan for cardiovascular and other noncommunicable diseasesThe World Health Assembly asked the World Health Organization to develop an action plan for the implementation of the global strategy against cardiovascular and other noncommunicable diseases. This plan will be submitted to the World Health Assembly in 2008. The Assembly also asked WHO to develop recommendations on the marketing of foods and nonalcoholic beverages to children. And it urged member countries to strengthen their efforts to prevent and control noncommunicable diseases.
