CVD PREVENTION AND CONTROL: PROVIDING THE TOOLS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF SUBMISSIONS TO SCIENTIFIC JOURNALS

Providing high-quality scientific publishing to stimulate the exchange of knowledge is an important aim that CVD Prevention and Control, the official journal of the World Heart Federation, strives to fulfill. In recognition of the fact that writing papers for submission to such journals can be a challenging and time-consuming task the Editorial Board organised a “Writer’s Workshop”, which took place during the World Congress of Cardiology, and provided guidelines on best practice.

Submitting manuscripts: how to increase acceptance rates

The objectives of the workshop were for participants to learn how articles are structured, how to organise their writing, making optimal the use of library facilities and how to respond to the reviewers’ comments. Participants also learnt about the electronic features of Elsevier’s site for CVD Prevention and Control and how to register as an author, submit a manuscript and track its progress from submission to publication. The workshop encouraged active participation, with opportunities for questions, discussion of ideas, identification of challenges and barriers.

Feedback from participants

The workshop generated very positive feedback from the participants who rated it as either “excellent” or “very good” on the evaluation forms. The most attractive feature to them was the ability to apply the skills almost immediately in their professional publishing activities. Some of the comments included:

  • “It is good to show that following some basic rules it may be easy to succeed in our publications”
  • “I like to learn how to write good articles…”
  • “The presentations were practical and the concepts were clear”
  • “It was very useful”
  • “It is a good approach”.

The presentations from this workshop are available to members through the World Heart Federation website.

Update from the Editorial Board Meeting

The Editorial Board also held a meeting during the congress and a key discussion point was the high level of interest generated by specific issues of CVD Prevention and Control which had either a single topic or regional focus. A decision was taken to   pursue this editing line further and future editions focusing on China and Africa are planned.
