ARGENTINA TO HOST NEXT WORLD CONGRESS OF CARDIOLOGY

The XVIth World Congress of Cardiology will take place 18 to 21 May 2008 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The Buenos Aires congress will be the first of the biennial world congresses. Previous world congresses took place every four years. It will also be the first of future congresses to carry the slogan “From Patients to Populations.” The slogan was designed to draw attention to the importance of taking a comprehensive view of the epidemic of cardiovascular disease.

International flavour

The World Heart Federation is organizing the Buenos Aires congress in collaboration with the Argentine Society of Cardiology and the Argentine Federation of Cardiology.

Delegates “will have the opportunity to learn and network with an estimated 20,000 cardiologists and related specialists, members of heart foundations and health professionals from more than 100 countries,” said World Heart Federation President Valentin Fuster and XVIth World Congress of Cardiology President Horacio Faella.

Planning is well underway

The World Heart Federation’s preparations for the Buenos Aires congress were well under way before those for the XVth World Congress of Cardiology in Barcelona ended. In 2004, the World Heart Federation’s General Assembly approved Buenos Aires as the venue.

“The World Congress of Cardiology 2008 will play a vital role in sharing science, building capacity and growing partnerships that will help us all to be better and stronger at fighting cardiovascular disease,” said Dr Sidney Smith, Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board. “A wide scientific programme is being planned to meet the expectations of this international gathering. Prevention, coronary heart disease, hypertension, interventions and arrhythmias are main topics along with a variety of important sessions of current interest in the cardiology field.”
