WORLD HEART FEDERATION MOURNS TREASURER NED HINES

The World Heart Federation mourns the death on 14 August 2006 of its Treasurer, Edward F. "Ned" Hines.

Mr Hines, 60, had been a member of the World Heart Federation's Board since 2003. He lived in Andover, Massachusetts, United States of America, and was a partner in the law firm of Hines & Corley of Lexington, Massachusetts.

At the last meeting of the Board in Barcelona, World Heart Federation President Valentin Fuster eulogized Mr Hines, drawing particular attention to his agile intellect and generous spirit, and asked the other Board members to honor a moment of silence in his memory.

Many years of service

Mr Hines had been a volunteer with the American Heart Association since 1971. He was its national Chairman in 1998-1999 and its Massachusetts Chairman in 1983.

As a lawyer, Mr Hines was a President of the Boston Bar Association (as well as of its charitable arm) and President of Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, which has established a scholarship fund in his memory.

He graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor's degree and from Harvard Law School.

"As one of the primary players with the [American] Heart Association, he positively affected the lives of millions of people throughout America and the world," said the Andover Townsman in an editorial. The newspaper also called him "a giant in his profession and a giant in the fight against heart disease."

He leaves behind his wife Elaine and his two children, Jonathan and Carolyn. Condolences can be sent to Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Centre Street, Newton MA, USA 02458.
