Supporting Documents for the UN High Level Summit on NCDs

On 13th May 2010, the United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of a Resolution calling for a UN High-Level Meeting on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) on 19-20 September 2011.  The focus of our efforts is now to ensure that the High Level Summit is a successful one and we will campaign tirelessly in the coming months to achieve this.

UN member states have committed to adopt ‘a concise, action-oriented outcomes document’ at the close of the High-Level Summit. We believe that this document is the key to changing the course of the global pandemic of NCDs.

This UN High-Level Summit is a historic opportunity to address the global pandemic of NCDs, which collectively claim a staggering 35 million lives each year. The burden of NCDs touches people in all nations. This burden is not just a human one because death and disability from NCDs also poses a major threat to economic development.

The supporting documents found on this page provide more information on the upcoming UN Summit on NCDs as well as the global burden of NCDs.

WHO Global Ministerial Conference on Healthy Lifestyles and Non-Communicable Diseases

On the 28-29 April, 2011, following the WHO Global Forum, the First Global Ministerial Conference on Healthy Lifestyles and Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Control was held in Moscow.  Attendance at the conference was very impressive, representatives from 170 countries, including 90 ministers of health, were present.  The meeting served as a capstone to the previous WHO Regional Consultations on NCDs and an important milestone in the lead up to the UN Summit on NCDs in September.  World Heart Federation President Sidney C Smith, Jr and Past President Pekka Puska participated in Roundtables at the Ministerial Conference, leading to good visibility for the World Heart Federation.  The Moscow Declaration was released as a product of the Ministerial Conference.

Analysis of WHO Regional Consultations

World Heart Federation members have been actively raising the priority of cardiovascular disease (CVD)  and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at regional consultations. A consultation has taken place in each of the WHO Regions. At these consultations, priorities for the Region regarding NCDs were discussed and a draft document was produced summarizing the expectations of the region for the United Nations High Level Meeting and its Outcomes Document.
