History

The WHO Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health was drawn up with the help of Member States, nutritional experts and the food industry. The World Heart Federation supported the Global Strategy by issuing two statements that were read during the WHO Executive Board January 2004 session where the strategy was discussed (see statements below):

The US, after writing to the WHO Director General to attempt to head off this initiative, insisted that further discussions would be needed before a final plan could be approved (see articles below):

The WHO delayed deciding whether to approve the plan until the end of February to allow for changes to the text. A draft resolution, amended by a drafting group during the 113th session was adopted by the Executive Board. The Global Strategy was presented to the World Health Assembly in May (17-22 May 2004) for final approval.
