Japan 2010

Japanese Circulation Society (member)

A wide variety of activities marked World Heart Day in the Kobe and Osaka, Japan. The focus was to provide a range of information and education to the general public and to experience easy ways to incorporate exercise and healthy eating in daily life.

More than 1,800 people participated in events and lectures.  Heart Health Classes were led by prominent physicians to ensure the public receives accurate information about heart health and healthy eating.

Health Consultations with a Nurse provided a one-to-one opportunity for participants to speak with a volunteer nurse about their health concerns.  The Nutrition Consultation with a Dietitian was very popular and provided healthy eating education and problem-solving.  Heart-Healthy Cooking Classes introduced heart healthy recipes that still used popular and traditional Japanese ingredients—to teach they can eat their favorite foods in a healthy way.

Tobacco cessation is a cornerstone of heart health and the Stop Smoking Booths were a cornerstone of the activities in both cities.  Medical Professionals staffed the booths to provide individual consultation and group discussion on strategies to stop smoking.

A Walk in the Park brought about 1,000 people together for a 4 km and 8 km walking event, highlighting the power of walking to improve heart health. Nordic Walking is a very efficient total body workout and introductory classes on the basic skills were taught.

“Learn Your Heart Age”, Let’s see Your Health Level”, and “Stop Smoking to Reduce Cardiovascular Disease” were popular interactive exhibits.

An Education Course to teach the use of an AED to the public was held. AEDs are now available in most public buildings and in public transportation stations in Japan.

The power of relaxation to reduce stress to improve overall health and reduce heart disease was highlighted by a Classical Concert.

The World Heart Day events for 2010 were planned and organized by Dr. Akira Matsumori, President Elect of the APSC, Dr. Akira Kitabatake, Secretary General of the APSC, and Dr. Mitsuhiro Yokoyama, Vice President of the APSC.
