The NCD Alliance

Working across the globe to put NCDs at the heart of health policies

The Non-Communicable Disease Alliance (NCD Alliance) was founded in 2009 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), joined the same year by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and the World Heart Federation (WHF), and in 2010 by the International Union Against TB and Lung Disease (The Union). Together these federations represent the four major NCDs.

Working with other major NGO organizations, the NCDA unites over 2,000 civil organizations in more than 170 countries. Through targeted advocacy and outreach and evidence-based policy work, the NCDA works to ensure that NCDs are recognized as a global emergency and are placed at the heart of all health policies.

World Heart Federation and the NCD Alliance

The World Heart Federation is a founder of the NCD Alliance. CEO Johanna Ralston is current Vice-Chair of the NCDA, a position she takes up while continuing to represent WHF and the global fight against cardiovascular disease (CVD). Johanna works closely with the Chair of the NCD Alliance, José Luis Castro, Executive Director of The Union, in driving the NCD Alliance’s strategic plan.

"I am excited and honoured to become Vice Chair of the NCD Alliance. At the World Heart Federation, we are working hard to get cardiovascular disease (CVD) on the agenda of every government, policymaker and healthcare professional in the world. My job at the NCD Alliance will be to support the NCDA’s vision and co-ordinate this on a bigger scale for every country, whether high-, low- or middle-income, to raise the profile of non-communicable diseases nationally and internationally.”
