Cardiological Society of India, Kerala Chapter (national member)

For World Heart Day a public education programme, including a free medical camp for the public, was held to screen for risk factors and provide health advice.

Hospitals conducted group walks, exhibitions and free medical camps. Activities took place in Thrissur,  Palakkad, Malappuram, Calicut, Kannur, Kollam, Kottayam and Trivandrum.

Academy of Cardiology at Mumbai (national associate member)

From 21-28 September complete cardiac check-ups and risk factor assessment will be provided for over 1000 patients at BSES Hospital and Nanavati Hospital in SV Road.

Bankers Heart Institute, Vadodara (non-member)

For this year's World Heart Day a heart check-up and echocardiography camp offered free screening for the first 1000 participants.

A team of cardiologists, physicians, physiotherapists, dietitians, and laboratory and echocardiography personnel assessed cardiac risk and provided advice for heart disease prevention.

On World Heart Day, free cardiac care health check-ups were provided for all police personnel in the local area. The Assistant Police Commissioner inaugurated the event.

Sadbhavna Medical and Heart Institute, Patiala (non-member)

For World Heart Day a special talk entitled "Heart Attacks: Know Your Risk Factors" was delivered by a cardiologist, and the keynote address was provided by the CTVS director.

About 100 doctors from the state of Punjab and 750 members of the public attended.

Silchar Medical College, Assam (non-member)

Six free heart check-up camps and two public awareness programmes were held in the small town of Silchar. Three of the camps were in rural areas and three were in urban areas. Ten specialist doctors, 20 junior doctors and a large number of undergraduate medical students helped provide risk factor assessment. The events were covered on local television and in newspapers.

Manipal Hospital, Bangalore (non-member)

More than 100 children from different schools participated in a drawing competition on the theme “Know Your Risk”.

Parents, the public and school teachers, and all the hospital consultants attended.

An interventional cardiologist delivered a special speech on the theme “Know Your Risk”. Prizes were awarded to the winners of the junior and senior level student categories. Certificates were given to all the participants.

Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Research Centre, Bangalore (non-member)

About 100 people wearing “Know Your Risk!” T-shirts participated in the World Heart Day walkathon, including two people with implanted left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) who walked 5 km. Leaflets were distributed to the general public at the walkathon and in hospitals. Posters on seven main cardiovascular disease risk factors were created by the rehabilitation staff and were displayed for a week. Interviews were aired on television and printed in a newspaper. A presentation on “Know Your Risk!” was given to the general public.

For World Heart Day there will be heart disease risk screening, plus smoking awareness, a free ECG camp and free medication.

For World Heart Day there will be a prevention and promotional health care programme and screening for all registered patients.

Health check-ups comprising lipid profile, blood sugar levels, and consultations with a physiotherapist, dietician and a doctor will be provided.

Three days of radio programmes promoting World Heart Day are to be aired in Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh. Live call-in shows featuring physicians are planned.

On 28 September a healthy heart walk, lectures, healthy snacks and a meditation session will be provided at the Senior Citizens Council Office.

Pediatric Cardiology Department, SMS Medical College, Jaipur (non-member)

On 28 September from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. children with rheumatic and congenital heart diseases are invited to undergo a health exam, including all relevant tests such as 2D echocardiography at the Sir Padampat Mother & Child Health Institute. They will be given free medication and advice about follow-up and treatment.

Hridayalaya Preventive Cardiology Center, Trivandrum (non-member)

In Kerala a walkathon was flagged off by the mayor of Trivandrum. This was followed by a grand inaugural function in which eminent personalities and media representatives participated. The cardiac camp registered more than 600 patients, who were screened for blood sugar, lipid profile, body fat and cardiac risk assessment. The events were covered in the local newspapers.

Kannur Medical College, Kerala >(non-member)

A 2-km World Heart Day walk was held from Kavenmulla to Chkrakkal, where the college faculty and students held awareness activities about heart diseases and their prevention for the people of Kannur.

A reception was also held, followed by a session in which the college’s head cardiologist provided advice for patients.

N. Sreedharan Memorial Institute of Medical Sciences, Kollam  (non-member)

A free cardiac risk assessment camp was held for 200 individuals in the 30-60 age group.

Consultations with a cardiologist and imaging in indicated cases were provided.

A Health Education Campaign was initiated and a Lifestyle Disease Clinic and Chest Pain Unit was inaugurated.

Indian Diabetes Education Association, Trivandrum (non-member)

Awareness lectures, heart disease risk detection, free measurement of body weight, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, blood sugar and electrocardiograms were provided for World Heart Day. Free treadmill testing was offered for high-risk patients.

About 500 people were screened.

On 28 September a "Healthy Heart Walk" was held in the city of Cochin, Kerala.

Saraf Hospital, Cochin (non-member)

World Heart Day was celebrated with a free cardiac risk evaluation campaign for which 146 people registered.History taking, clinical examination and blood pressure measurement were provided. This was followed by electrocardiogram, serum cholesterol and random blood sugar estimation. The results were analyzed by the cardiologist.

A press release was distributed to local newspapers and an advertisement was published. Handouts on hypertension, diabetes and coronary artery disease were distributed to the participants.

Lions Club, Cochin (non member)

About 2,600 people participated in the World Heart Day events in Cochin, which included a “Walk for the Heart”. A press release, T-shirts and leaflets were distributed. Balloons, placards and banners were printed and used for activities in Ernakulam, near Cochin. About 600 people underwent risk factor screening. The activities received wide newspaper coverage.

Sunrise Heart Institute, Cochin (non member)

A preventive heart check-up camp with the theme “Know Your Risk" will be held on 27 September. The same day there will be a walk from Collectorate to Bharathmata College, involving doctors, paramedical staff, public figures, school children and the general public. A cardiac preventive education meeting will be held after the walk at the auditorium of Sunrise Hospital.

KMC Mangalore (non-member)

World Heart Day activities will begin on 15 September and will include a 10-km 
run for some 5000 young hearts, a drawing competition for kids, corporate talks by cardiologists, health check packages and mass risk factor screening.

On 24 and 28 September there will be heart disease risk factor measurements, a talk and teaching session on yoga as a preventive measure, a blood pressure check campaign and a talk on how to prevent heart diseases.

On 28 September educational activities about heart conditions are to be launched in coastal Karnataka. An online campaign for heart disease prevention will also be undertaken.

Rallies and health seminars will be held as they have been for the last 7 years, involving the participation of about 500 people. There will be free distribution of health education material and emergency medical kits to participants. Activities will take place on the Ahmedabad Management Association premises and at Bhaikaka Hall in Ahmedabad.

World Heart Day and "Health of the heart" will be the focus of the September 2008 issue of a magazine circulated in 70 major cities in India. The issue will feature numerous articles by renowned cardiologists and heart surgeons exploring various facets of heart health. Shahryar Sheikh, President of the World Heart Federation, has kindly agreed to contribute an article on the World Heart Day 2008 theme "Know Your Risk".

A public awareness event on sudden cardiac death is being offered on 27 and 28 September by the Indian Society of Electrocardiology. The Society’s President and Secretary will address the gathering in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

In Tamil Nadu there will be a free camp to identify risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Also planned are running and walking events at Lake View Park in Madurai and lectures about cardiovascular health.

From 25-28 September activities will include risk factor screening for 500 individuals, awareness classes and medical check-ups in Padanilam, Nooranad and Charummood, Kerala.

Sharp Health Care, Pune (non member)

Heart care awareness activities will be held in schools and colleges to highlight preventive measures, healthy habits (exercise, diet, stress relief), versus unhealthy habits (smoking, alcohol, fatty foods). There will also be risk awareness, a poster presentation, a quiz and workshops in social groups and corporate and community centres.

Workshops on simple tips for staying heart healthy will be held at centres in Pune, Ahmednagar.

Activities will run throughout September with activities for the public conducted every weekend.

On 28 September a "Know Your Risks" advocacy meeting is planned in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh. A support group for parents of children who underwent heart surgery is also being established.

Heart Care Clinic, Cuddalore (non-member)

A public screening programme to check blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, BMI and waist circumference will be held at the Cuddalore town hall in Tamil Nadu on 28 September. Afterwards there will be a lecture on a heart healthy diet and lifestyle measures. A walk for the masses is planned in the public stadium in Cuddalore with participation of the municipal chairman, members of the assembly, the district collector and other important figures.

Gandhigram Institute of Rural Health and Family Welfare Trust, Dindigul District

World Heart Day activities in Tamil Nadu will include a mass rally, an exhibition and a public meeting involving NGOs, self-help groups, students, the public and experts. The activities will take place on 24 September in Manamadurai and on 28 September in Sivakasi. Newspaper and television coverage is expected.

On 28 September a risk assessment camp will be held at Indus Hospitals in Maharanipeta,Visakhapatnam.

In Kerala, starting at 8 a.m. on 28 September there will be a Heart Walk followed by lectures in Karunagapally. Coverage is expected in newspapers and local broadcast media.

Srinivasa Heart Foundation and Srinivasa Heart Centre, Warangal (non member)

A special book launch event was held at Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal for the official release of the book You And Your Heart, covering around 50 topics on heart health in the local Telugu language. Key figures, dignitaries and doctors participated in the event.

Wockhardt Hospitals, Hyderabad (non member)

On 28 September Wockhardt Hospitals will be holding a “Wockathon” starting at 6 a.m. from Jalavihar, Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh. The aim is to increase awareness of cardiovascular risk factors and to promote healthy lifestyles, particularly for company employees pushed for time and lacking the motivation to exercise. Young school children, as the future of Hyderabad, will also be involved.

Kurnool Heart Foundation, Andhra Pradesh

World Heart Day activities will begin with a CME activity, followed by an evening award ceremony and a key note address on “How to keep your heart healthy”. 

A World Heart Day brochure will be distributed. The poet Sirivennala Seetharama Sastry will be the guest of honour, and the event will be followed by a heart and music programme.

Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Erandawane (non-member)

On World Heart Day there will be a mini-walkathon of 4.8 km for patients who have undergone bypass surgery (CABG) or angioplasty (PTCA) and a nano-walkathon (1 km) for kids who have undergone open heart surgery. The walks will go from Shaniwarwada to Mangeshkar Hospital and media coverage is expected.

A risk factor identification campaign and a seminar for army personnel and their families are to be held at the army hospital and central auditorium in Pathankot, Punjab.

Kasturba Hospital, Manipal (non-member)

An interactive session addressing cardiac risk factors, healthy lifestyles and stress will be held for the students of Manipal Institute of Technology on 24 September. An “Open Dialogue” session will also be held for women on 26 September at the Hotel Valley View International in Manipal, Karnataka.

On 27 September at 10:30 a.m. there will be an awareness talk for the general public on the theme "Do you Know your Risk” at the Conference Hall, Shirdi Sai Baba Cancer Hospital. In addition, a special cardiac screening package will be offered from 22-29 September.

The Mission Hospital, Durgapur (non-member)

A motorcycle rally will be held in Durgapur, West Bengal, on the 28 September followed by an awareness programme on “Know Your Risks” provided by eminent cardiologists and cardiac surgeons in the region. The seminar will be attended by local industry leaders and decision makers.

A week of activities will begin on 28 September, including risk factor assessment camps in four different locations in Amritsar, a bicycle rally, healthy cooking lessons for various women’s organizations, a painting contest among school children, distribution of booklets on cardiovascular disease risk factors, and health talks on local TV and radio.

World Heart Day activities included a workshop on basic life support which trained 120 volunteers.

A dance and song on the World Heart Day theme was performed by school children.

There was also a talk for school children and parents, organized by Dr. Nandurkar School in Yavatmal, and a lecture for medical students. A yoga seminar was held for the public.

A radio talk show on the World Heart Day theme was aired and articles were published in the newspaper.

Dr. G.S. Heart Foundation, Madras (non member)

From 23 September to 4 October screening of bank employees and estimation of their Framingham Risk Score for coronary artery disease will be provided.

There will also be a Mega Health Camp in association with Revathi Medical Centre, the Rotary Club of Madras North West and the Rotary Club of Tiruppur.

Dr. J.K.P Medical Center, Coimbatore (non member)

On 28 September, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be free risk factor assessment and an 
awareness programme for heart attack prevention. In addition the Healthy Heart Club will hold its 78th monthly meeting.

Ramana Health Foundation, Pondicherry (non member)

On World Heart Day at the Rotary Club in Pondicherry and surrounding villages, a smoking awareness campaign will be undertaken, along with cardiac testing, health check-ups and free treatment. Information will be distributed to the media.

Activity Report:

Baroda Heart Institute & Research Centre, Baroda (non member)

About 600 people underwent risk factor screening at the free health check-up camp for World Heart Day.

The check-ups included height, weight, blood pressure, body-mass index, blood sugar, lipid profile, as well as a medical assessment, physiotherapy and diet counselling. Imaging tests and stress management counselling were also offered, as were yoga and meditation sessions.

Leaflets, posters and banners were distributed and displayed. The events were advertised on radio and in the newspaper.

About 1,000 people in all participated.
