On 18 January 2018, the World Heart Federation (WHF), together with its members the Spanish Heart Foundation (Fundación Española del Corazón – FEC) and the Spanish Society of Cardiology (Sociedad Espanola de Cardiologia – SEC), attended a press conference in Madrid advocating for the need to improve the approach to hypercholesterolemia by positioning it as a first-level cardiovascular risk factor in Spain.

The press conference was attended by Dr Carlos Macaya (President of the FEC), Dr Leopoldo Perez de la Isla (Representative of the FEC and SEC in the ‘Hypercholesterolemia Dialogues’ in Spain), Dr Pedro Mata (President of the Familial Hypercholesterolemia Foundation – FHF) and Prof David Wood (President of the WHF).

Prior to this in late 2017, a situational analysis of cholesterol was conducted in Spain which allowed for a productive discussion to develop a cholesterol roadmap for the country.  The WHF then had a brainstorming session with a multi-stakeholder group of experts representing different scientific bodies and patient associations, and the Deusto Business School Health (DBS Health) on how to address the urgent situation of cholesterol in Spain.
